Krzysztof Sapkowski, Son of Polish Author Andrzej Sapkowski, Has Passed

It is with a heavy heart that we learned of Krzysztof’s passing this month. The details of his death are unknown, and we respect the privacy of the Sapkowski family at this time.

Nowa Fantastyka, a Polish fantasy magazine, became aware of the loss by Sapkowski himself. In a goodbye piece in honor of the late editor Maciej Parowski, who also passed in June, he also mentioned the passing of his son.

Without inspiration from his son, Sapkowski would not have submitted “The Witcher” into a fantasy contest. The story of The Witcher has become a beloved series across the world, and has been adapted into video games, a Polish television show, and is currently being produced by Netflix. In a past interview, Sapkowski spoke about his son’s influence:

“I wanted to take pleasure in my son, who is an avid lover of this type of literature and a regular reader of your magazine [Fantasy]. He once asked me: 'Why do not you write something like that?'. 'No problem, I said, I will write'. And so the Witcher was created. Anyway, from my son I learned about your competition and its conditions.”

We are sending our love to friends and family of Krzysztof Sapowski during this terrible loss.
